Chris McMullen - McMullen SMSF Audits
There's a particular look people get when you mention the annual audit of their self-managed super fund. It sits somewhere between a dentist appointment and doing your tax, and the main hope is that it's over quickly and nobody finds anything.
Which is fair enough. But in our corner of the world, SMSFs have a habit of turning up at exactly the wrong moment - a separation where the fund is the biggest thing on the table, or a death that leaves one trustee in charge of something they'd always left to their partner. That's usually when you find out whether anyone has been looking closely at the fund, or just ticking the boxes.
Chris McMullen is firmly in the looking-closely camp.
Chris runs McMullen SMSF Audits and is an ASIC registered SMSF auditor, working with accountants and trustees to keep their funds on the right side of the rules. He's diligent, he holds himself to a very high standard and he knows an awful lot about how these funds actually work. When someone described him to us recently, they said he stands out "in a world of checkbox, half-assed auditors". We thought about tidying that up for print, but it was too accurate to change.
What we appreciate most is that Chris doesn't stop at telling you something's wrong. He'll explain why in plain English and then help you work out what to do about it - which, if you've ever been handed a page of audit findings with no context, you'll know is rarer than it should be.
For us, that's gold. SMSF questions tend to land on our desk at 4.55pm on a Friday, and having someone we trust to give a straight, considered answer makes us look a lot smarter than we are.
If you or your clients have anything to do with an SMSF, we recommend getting to know Chris.
